I and my twin sister are turning 52 this year. (Can it really be two years already since our fabulous fifty?) Given the number 52 being the number of cards in a poker deck, I wanted to do something card-related to celebrate, and I recalled how my sister and I do tarot readings for each other often on our birthday.

“Ah!” I said. “I can do a short story every week this year, based on a randomly-drawn tarot card. 52 weeks, 52 cards!”

Then I said, “Wait… there are 78 cards in a tarot deck. OH! But I’ll do the minor arcana only… noooo that’s 56 cards, because there are 4 court cards instead of the 3 in a poker deck… who should I leave out? The aces? The pages?”

Then I cackled, “The Kings!”

SO, yes. I have made a little deck of the minor arcana, minus kings, and placed it next to my computer. (Memo to me: shuffle a new deck AFTER you remove cards. Oy.)

Starting on March 1, the Sunday after my birthday, I will draw one card every Sunday, and then give myself a week to write something–be it a flash fiction, poem, or essay–based on that card.

I am, of course, using the “Celestial Stick People” Tarot designed by my spouse (with my help as Tarot consultant). You can buy the deck to play along here.

Hrm… maybe I’ll post drawing the card live on my Tiktok? If I have time that particular Sunday.

I’ll update this blog post to keep track of what I write:
